First Nascar Race Bristol Motor Speedway
My first NASCAR car race (Bristol Motor Speedway August 25th 2007) was a treat. The drive to Bristol wasn’t too bad only got lost at the end, turned instead of going straight only lost about 20 minutes. While winding our way to the campsite homeowners who had a space left to squeeze in where hollering at the top of their lungs parking $10.00 The truck in front of me was giving people rides (to who knows where) for cash.
We arrived about 6:00 pm at the campsite WOW you would not believe all the people it was incredible. Pitched the tent (the first one I’ve slept in for probably 15 years) it was so hot. I can’t imagine how hot it would have been earlier that day. So off to the race since we had no idea where we were going we just followed the crowd through the path.
A short distance later (we had a great campsite couple minutes from the gate) we ended up on the main road there were cars, people, and trash lined up as far as you could see. Yep, what stuck with me was the bottles and garbage that folks had left sitting on the bridge and any surface they could.
We walked up the hill to the speedway and yet more people the mister spray booth felt really good about then. Went through the gates then had to walk down to our seats (row 5) made you hope you didn’t have to go to the bathroom. We squeezed into our seats I mean literally squeezed some very elderly drunk woman with bathing suit sat next to me.
I couldn’t get over how many people where there I was amazed. The race got ready to start with jets flying overhead and the singing of the National Anthem. Someone landed on the track with a hang glider parachute looking thing and the race started.
Since I’ve never been to a race before I found it odd not hearing anything except the roaring of the cars whizzing by. (the ear plugs worked great) When something happened you had to rely on a person nearby who had earphones on to tell what was going on. Another thing that was different from watching on TV the cars look like they are going 20 miles an hour NOT HARDLY.
The fans were fun to watch they would stand up and yell for their driver to go faster (like they could hear them) and point. The race went by quicker than I expected. Some folks were a little disappointed there wasn’t as many crashes (to me that seemed good) my friend’s favorite driver Harvick didn’t win and neither did Jr.
By biggest disappointment was I bought a new camera and should have got the memory card at the same time. Jr pitted right in front of me I clicked and the memory was full. Nuts
Fortunately I only had to go to the bathroom once and took that opportunity to buy my friend a shirt. He bought me a margarita, hmm; wonder what was on his mind?
Well the race ended, it was dark but we found our way back to the campsite despite of the fact we didn’t know exactly where we were. I talked with the fellow camped next to us he told me the county inmates clean up the trash afterwards.
Had a great time didn’t sleep much the mattress went flat, so we tried to sleep in the car but left earlier than anticipated instead. The traffic on the way back was worse then the arrival (we didn’t have any) took about 45 minutes to get to the freeway or interstate as the folks out here call it. Drove for awhile then blam! stuck in traffic for an hour before the Wytheville turn off. There was an accident, how sad.
The beauty of the whole thing was since I’m a travel agent I bought the tickets from my own website made a commission met some contacts and had fun all at the same.
Gosh, I love getting paid to travel; next time I might try a football game!
Made a short video and I do mean l short no memory in the camera of the pictures. I finally picked up a memory card last week.
